2003-05-15: Trip to Dublin

So, Claire (USA) and I did go to Dublin on Monday. Got off the DART and promptly got lost...and stayed that way for the rest of the day. It was great! We went to Trinity College and saw the Book of Kells. It was so inspirational, artwise and such. I really love Celtic styles and colours. Then we went to some CD stores and bookstores (yay!) and I got some new stuff including a disc by JJ72 and the Afrocelts. Check them out online...kick butt albums from Irish bands. I also got a book called "Wild Irish Women" about interesting characters throughout history including murderers and activists (interesting grouping, I know). We went to a cafe too and then wandered our way home. Darn cities without a grid system and using roundabouts! Anything stranger? I think not. Dublin is confusing and apparently people get around in relation to the pubs (which are about two per block), but it is beautiful in its own sort of hard-done-by tortured way. A lot of amazing history. Also went to Robby's house last night for a Buddhist meeting. They chanted in hopes of peace and reconciliation...really interesting stuff. Ok here is a rundown of the volunteers and their countries since a few of you asked. Levy (Congo), Raju (Nepal), Warren (South Africa), Claire (California), Irma (Bosnia), Caitlin (Toronto...yay!), Vanessa (France)...oh and Hillary from the States is paid staff, but hangs with us, and I guess Caitlin isn't technically volunteering. However, guess how much I get paid - 170 per month. I'm practically making money here! Everything is pretty expensive in that something will cost what it would cost in Canadian dollars, only it is Euro and we all know the amazing strength of the Canadian dollar in relation to other currencies. So a CD is like 20...$25. Anyway, still having a great time. Went to Johnny Fox's...a pub in the hills. Totally real Irish pub...so fun! Guinness is my new best friend (sorry friends, sorry family!).
